Following his retirement, Lanier joined the faculty as a lecturer at the College of William and Mary, Graduate School of Business (1976-83), and continued his work as chairman of the Investment Committee for Newport News Employees' Retirement Fund (1972-96) and as vice chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (1978-94).
